Open Sprites

Some sprites are free to be their own people. These are those sprites.

Take one of the basic sprites from the Ends of the Matrix. Instead of buying Attributes, buy rating for the Sprite: just like Attributes, the maximum BP you can spend on rating is equal to half the starting BP value. For 0 BP, you can be a rating 4 Sprite, and for each additional 60 BP, increase the rating by 1. The Edge of a Sprite is equal to half its rating, rounded up. The Resonance of a Sprite is equal to its rating.

Signal Range is also purchased like an Attribute. It starts at 1, and increasing it costs 15 BP each, up to 3. Increasing it further to 4 costs 30 BP.

The augmented cap for an open sprite's attributes is equal to the sprite's attributes at rating 6, plus 50%. Even increasing rating cannot increase the sprite's attributes above this cap. (Thus, an Archive Sprite's attribute caps would be Charisma 9, Intuition 12, Logic 13, Willpower 7, System 7, Response 7, Firewall 7.)

Skills

Skills specified in the sprite type always have a rank equal to the sprite's rating, to a maximum of 3. Other skills can be learned in the sprite's own time, like a normal person, for the normal BP costs, with starting caps of 4 except for 2 5s or one 6, like a normal person.

Sprites can't compile or register sprites, but they can learn technomancer skills and the complex forms related to those skills.

Complex Forms

Open sprites get the complex forms specified by the sprite type for free. They can also learn other complex forms for 3 BP each, just like a Technomancer.

Powers and Optional Powers

Open sprites get the powers specified by the sprite type for free, and one optional power for every 3 rating they have. Data Masking and Merge are optional powers for all open sprites, and very strongly recommended.

Advancement

Open sprites can continue to learn skills and complex forms.

Their max rating is 7, and they can spend karma to raise their rating.

Submersion

To raise their maximum rating, open Sprites have to Submerge. This is a process just like the Technomancer I guess, with the same costs. Aside from raising their maximum rating, it also gives them one additional choice from the following list:

  • Optional Power Get yet another optional power.

  • Credit Rating As described in EotM.

  • Deep Resonance Gateway As described in EotM.

  • Resonance Gateway As described in EotM.

  • Great Form Power The open sprite can learn one Great Form power from the EotM list. Maybe they could learn a second one by "deep submersion" or whatever, if that's not too cheeky.

Free Spirits

Some spirits are free to be their own people. These are those spirits.

Take one of the basic spirits. Instead of buying Attributes, buy force for the Spirit: just like Attributes, the maximum BP you can spend on force is equal to half the starting BP value. For 0 BP, you can be a force 4 Spirit, and for each additional 60 BP, increase the force by 1. The Edge of a Spirit is equal to half its force, rounded up. The Magic of a Spirit is equal to its Force.

The augmented cap for a free spirit's attributes is equal to the spirit's attributes at force 6, plus 50%. Even increasing force cannot increase the spirit's attributes above this cap. (Thus, a free Spirit of Air's attribute caps would be Body 6, Agility 13, Reaction 15, Strength 4, Charisma 9, Intuition 9, Logic 9, Willpower 9.)

Skills

Skills specified in the spirit type always have a rank equal to the spirit's rating, to a maximum of 3. Other skills can be learned in the spirit's own time, like a normal person, for the normal BP costs, with starting caps of 4 except for 2 5s or one 6, like a normal person.

Spirits can't summon or bind, but they can learn magician skills if they want to.

Spells

Free spirits can learn spells for 3 BP each, just like a magician.

Powers and Optional Powers

Free spirits get the powers specified by the spirit type for free, and one optional power for every 3 force they have. Mind Link and Item Hide are optional powers for all free spirits, and highly recommended.

Item Hide

Type: P Action: Complex Range: Self Duration: Sustained The free spirit can hide itself in a completely mundane object, disappearing from the astral plane and letting it be carried through magical wards. While in this form, it can maintain and make use of its sustained powers (including, say, continue to communicate using an active Mind Link), or use a complex action to exit this form, but otherwise can do nothing.

Advancement

Free spirits can continue to learn skills.

Their max force is 7, and they can spend karma to raise their force.

Initiation

To raise their maximum rating, Free Spirits have to Initiate. This is a process just like the Magician I guess, with the same costs. Aside from raising their maximum force, it also gives them one additional choice from the following list:

  • Optional Power Get yet another optional power.

  • Great Form Power The free spirit can learn its appropriate Great Form power.
